Disaster Relief Programs at FRIEND

A nongovernmental organization dedicated to developing communities on Fiji’s main island of Viti Levu, the Foundation for Rural Integrated Enterprises and Development (FRIEND) primarily serves single parents, widows, individuals with disabilities, orphaned children, and former prisoners. FRIEND sponsors a number of social programs in the areas it serves, including initiatives focused on disaster relief and rehabilitation.

Located in one of the most disaster-prone regions in the world, Fiji has experienced an increase in frequency of damaging hurricanes and cyclones in recent years. Fiji has also demonstrated vulnerability to drought. Together with communities throughout Fiji, FRIEND prepares for disasters via capacity building and food security programs.

Because communities located near shorelines and fault lines typically suffer the most during natural disasters, FRIEND prioritizes them during its disaster preparation efforts. In the wake of natural disasters, FRIEND begins by delivering humanitarian assistance to those in need. After stabilizing local communities in terms of nutrition and health care, FRIEND establishes livelihood plans and to begin the rebuilding process.
