BAE Delivers LHD As Australia Considers F-35Bs

SYDNEY/CANBERRA/BEIJING — BAE Systems has handed over the first of Australia’s two new assault ships as the government considers whether to equip the vessels with a squadron of Lockheed Martin F-35B Lightnings.

The first ship will be commissioned into the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) this year as HMAS Canberra. It will remain at BAE’s Williamstown shipyard in Melbourne for several weeks as navy personnel move aboard for training, building on the extensive preparations undertaken at a ship simulator that the company operates in Sydney.
