NASA Awards $12.5 Million For Space Radiation Studies

HOUSTON — As part of its preparations for future human deep space exploration, NASA is awarding $12.5 million for nine ground-based investigations into the links between space radiation and cancer, heart and circulatory system ailments and declining cognitive function.

The research using high-energy, heavy ions that simulate space radiation will be carried out over one to four years at the NASA Space Radiation Laboratory at the Brookhaven National Laboratory in Brookhaven, New York.
