China Continues To Perplex U.S. Navy Leaders

U.S. Navy leaders are still trying to make sense of recent Chinese actions in the Asia-Pacific and nearby waters.

Speaking with reporters Sept. 30 during a roundtable discussion of naval issues, Navy Secretary Ray Mabus put the most recent harassment incident involving a P-8 Poseidon and Chinese fighter into perspective.

The armed Chinese fighter jet “conducted a dangerous intercept” of the Poseidon on Aug. 10 on a routine mission about 135 mi. east of Hainan Island in international airspace, says Rear Adm. John Kirby, a Pentagon spokesman.
